About

SOS Animal Preá is a dedicated non-profit organization committed to rescuing and caring for stray dogs with love and compassion. Based in the picturesque beach village of Preá, in Northeast Brazil, we provide shelter, medical care, and a safe haven for these vulnerable animals.

As Preá has grown rapidly in recent years, so has the number of abandoned and homeless dogs. This surge has led to heartbreaking consequences – many dogs suffer from severe health conditions, while others fall victim to car accidents. With no control over their birth rate, the stray population continues to multiply at an alarming rate. This overpopulation not only affects the animals’ well-being but also impacts the environment. Many of these dogs scavenge through trash to survive, leading to waste being scattered throughout the village and contributing to pollution.

The situation has always been critical and with no governmental assistance, these dogs rely on the good will of people like Coca, a local man who has been dedicating most of his time for the last 8 years to help save their lives. Despite his clear lack of resources, Coca was able to create a safe place for stray dogs in critical situation and feed them with the very little he had, all by himself.

Our mission is to maintain this shelter created by Coca and continue to rescue, heal, and protect these innocent lives, giving them the care, love, and second chance they deserve. Beyond rescue efforts, we actively promote sterilization campaigns to control overpopulation and improve animal welfare. We also engage with the local community through school visits and events, raising awareness about responsible pet care and the importance of animal protection.

SOS Animal Prea Brazil, and Stichting SOS Animal Prea

These two entities were founded in 2025. They are officially two separate organizations based in Brazil and the Netherlands, respectively. A part of the board, consisting of 10 members in Brazil and 3 members in the Netherlands, is dedicated to both organizations. They support each other, help where they can, and represent each country, with the Dutch foundation primarily focusing on assisting stray dogs in Brazil.

Both the Brazilian and the Dutch foundations hold official charitable status. This is not only stated in the articles of incorporation but also registered with the tax authorities. In the Netherlands, this has been translated into an ANBI status, which stands for Algemene Nut Beogende Instelling (Public Benefit Organization). Our goal is to serve the public interest (the welfare of stray dogs), and all board members work entirely on a voluntary basis. They are not paid for their work, ensuring that more than 90% of the received funds directly benefit the needy dogs, which is the purpose of the foundation.

In the coming year, after this founding year has passed, we will publish the percentage of the funds that have actually gone towards the animals in our annual report and on the website.
